Calculation of three-dimensional turbulent flow around ship structures (1990)

Abstract
This report presents calculation of three-dimensional turbulent viscous flow over a HSVA tanker with a rounded nose at the bow end, a long constant rectangular cross section at the middle and finally ending in a sharp tapered stern section with comptex hub geometry to provide the propeller. The calculation however does not account for the effect of surfact waves or propellers on the flow. A hybrid procedure coupling the algebraic and the differential method of grid-generation is used to generate the body fitted c-o type of grid configuration around the ship.A finite volume method based on cell centered variabie arrangement and Cartesian velocity components coupled with standard k- E model for turbulence is then employed to calculate the time-averaged, three-dimensional flow field. The computer code and the relevant data structure are so organised that most of the code except the implicit linear solver used is fully vectorisable, so as to exploit the potential of modern vector computers. Comparison of calculation results with available measurement data shows reasonable agreement for the overall flow characteristics like distribution of pressure or skin-friction coefficient around the ship.
