THE HOPFIELD RYDERG SERIES OF $N_{2}$ AT LOW ROTATIONAL TEMPERATURE (1992)

High-resolution absorption spectra of supersonically expanding nitrogen in the 70--66 nm region have been recorded, both photographically and photoelectrically, against the background continua emitted from a high-frequency discharge in helium and from the synchrotron radiation source of the Photon Factory in Tsukuba, Japan. The low rotational temperature of the spectra, estimated at about 25 K, makes it possible to compare the autoionizing resonances with the photoionization cross sections calculated by Raoult et al. (1) for the non--rotating molecule. Much of the complexity that characterizes, even for moderately high n values, the corresponding room temperature spectra is rotationally induced and has to be interpreted in terms of 2-uncoupling effects rather than perturbations by an unidentified ``interloper"" as suggested by Baig and Connerade (2).
