Status of the ANTARES Underwater Neutrino Telescope (2003)

Abstract
Status the ANTARES Underwater Neutrino Telescope Hallewell Centre Physique des Particules Marseille Representing the ANTARES Collaboration Abstract The ANTARES Collaboration constructing deep underwater neutrino detector for operation off the French Mediterranean coast near Toulon The detector which will begin operation will have aperture and will contain nine hundred photomultiplier tubes The photomultiplier axes will angled downward toward the seabed observe the erenkov emissions upward going muons created the interactions near the detector high energy neutrinos traversing the Earth These neutrinos arrive undeviated from variety galactic and extragalactic sources astrophysical interest and might produced the possible annihilation dark matter neutralinos The design and present status the detector are summarized Results from site evaluation and the development supporting instrumentation are outlined Introduction The ANTARES underwater neutrino detector shown artist impression figure The first phase detector implementation will have ten detection lines spaced sea floor grid and will contain total nine hundred photo multiplier tubes PMTs housed optical modules grouped triplets thirty levels rising from subsequent expansion the array fourteen such detector lines possible Due the purity seawater great depth light absorption and scattering are small However the detector subject backgrounds from cosmic ray muons erenkov light from produced disintegrations and luminescence from deep
