Article Are Cognitive Impairments Associated With Sensitivity Stress Schizophrenia Experience Sampling Study Inez Myin Germeys Lydia Krabbendam Jelle Jolles Philippe Delespaul Jim van D Objective Patients with diagnosis schizophrenia display cognitive impairments and abnormal sensitivity stress However little known about the relationship between these two endophenotypes Method Neuropsychological tests were administered patients with schizophrenia other psychosis assess cognitive functioning and the experience sampling method structured diary technique assessing current context and mood daily life was used assess appraised subjective stress related daily events and activities and emotional reaction these daily life stressors Results Multilevel random regression analyses showed that some instances cognitive functioning did not alter emotional reaction stress other instances inverse relationship was found indicating that better performance neuropsychological tests was related greater emotional reaction stress Conclusions The results indicate that emotional reaction stress the daily lives patients with schizophrenia may not consequence cognitive impairments and that the two mechanisms may act through different pathways Such pathways may related the extremes clinical outcome that have been observed schizophrenia episodic reactive good outcome and more chronic form characterized high levels negative symptoms and cognitive impairments Psychiatry focus schizophrenia research has been
