Abstract
Paper IMAS Pulse Tube Cooler Development and Testing Chan Nguyen Colbert and Raab TRW Space Technology Division Redondo Beach Ross and Johnson Jet Propulsion Laboratory California Institute Technology Pasadena ABSTRACT Integrated Multispectral Atmospheric Sounder IMAS cryocooler has been developed over the past two years for providing the order watt cooling lightweight compact configuration The design goal for the cooler was factor three size and mass reduction over the AIRS cooler design addition the efficiency goal for the watt cryogenic load was compressor input power less than lower than the AIRS cooler that cooling capacity The developed cooler incorporates vibrationally balanced compressor with heat spreader the center plate this further increases thetotal system effi ciency maintaining temperature difference between the after cooler and the heat rejection interface Two different coldheads have been designed for the IMAS application integral linear option and split coaxialoption The integral linear option offers efficient per formance and single warm mechanical thermalinterface The split coaxialoption offers com pactness and some cold interface system advantages The developmentof the IMAS cryocooler presented together with thermal vibration and performance data gathered the com pleted cooler both TRW and JPL INTRODUCTION The Integrated Multispectral Atmospheric Sounder IMAS instrument advanced con cept instrument being examined JPL second generationatmospheric sounder f
