| Recirculation of Liquid Metal Current Collectors in Acyclic Machines. (1998) | |||||||||
Abstract | |||||||||
| The patent application describes a method and means for reducing the differential head across the rotor of superconducting electric motors by creating a recirculation action in the rotor return path. The recirculation is achieved by permitting the liquid metal flow path to return through the rotor in order to resupply liquid metal to the inlet side of the collector after the expulsive Lorentz force which acts on the liquid metal at the collector has raised the height of liquid metal on the outlet side of the collector to sufficient centrifugal head, or gravity head at low speeds, to cause the liquid metal to return to the inlet side of the collector through insulated, low impedance paths through the rotor. | |||||||||
