Rational Design of Square Footings (9999)

Abstract
Isolated footings are commonly designed assuming a uniform soil reaction pressure. Critical moments are assumed to occur at the sections through column faces and are the same in two mutually perpendicular directions for square footings. This approach, though widely followed, is unrealistic, since it does not take into consideration the actual contact pressure distribution as obtained on the basis of interaction between soil and footing. The authors have analysed square footings by the yield line theory assuming parabolic soil pressure distribution consistent with current knowledge. The results of the analysis, given in graphical form, are of general purpose and can enable quick and accurate design of isolated footings by working stress method or by ultimate load theory. (AA)
