Class II Survey and Testing of Cultural Resources at the Melrose Air Force Range, Curry and Roosevelt Counties, New Mexico. (2005)

Abstract
This work reports results from 2 phases of a survey for cultural resources on 9,940 acres at the Melrose Air Force Range. The survey, geomorphic assessment, interviews and archival research were performed for development of a cultural resource management plan for the Melrose Range. The project area is located approx. 30 mi W of Clovis, NM. A total of 62 sites and 195 isolated occurrences was recorded during survey, and limited archaeological excavations were conducted at 8 prehistoric sites. This report documents the use of the project area from Folsom through historic homestead times. Theoretical research concerns centered on chronology, mobility, settlement and subsistence and regional interaction. During prehistoric periods, the region was used for limited hunting and plant gathering. Early Archaic groups tenuously have affinities with people in northwestern New Mexico, but during the Late Archaic and Ceramic Periods, most cultural affinities seem to relate to primarily southeastern Mogollon and secondarily to Plains affiliations. Ancillary studies employed obsidian hydration, radiocarbon and thermoluminiscence dating for chronological development. (edc)
