| Comparative Study of the Bottom Friction and Coriolis Force in Shallow Tidal Zones (Etude Comparee du Frottement et de la Force de Coriolis dans les Zones a Marees de Faible Profondeur), (2005) | |||||||||
Abstract | |||||||||
| In shallow maritime zones with considerable tidal movements, the forces of friction upon the bottom and the Coriolis force caused by the earth's rotation, both of which play a part in the dynamics of the tidal phenomenon, are of the same order of magnitude. Experimental studies of schematic models permitted determining the reciprocal and particular effects of the friction and of the Coriolis force in accordance with the dimensions of the maritime zone to be represented on a scale model. The Coriolis force appeared to have a predominant effect upon the propagation of the tide, whereas the two forces act jointly upon the current fields. A report on the present state of the French studies of tides in scale models is given. (Author). Trans. of International Assn. of Scientific Hydrology, Surface Water Comm.
