EFFECT OF MATERIAL CHARACTERISTIC LENGTH ON THE INITIATION, GROWTH AND BAND WIDTH OF ADIABATIC SHEAR BANDS IN DIPOLAR MATERIALS (1988)

Abstract
A shear band is presumed to have formed if the introduction of a temperature perturbation in a body undergoing simple shearing déformations results in a narrow region deforming very severely relative to the rest of the body. Zero heat flux and the particle velocity are prescribed at the top and bottom faces of the body. The effect of different values assigned to the material characteristic length in the dipolar theory on solution variables such as the band width, dipolar stress, temperature rise and the maximum plastic strain-rate occurring at any point in the body is explored.
