Workflow assessment (2003)

Abstract
We hypothesised that workflow assessment would enable us to identify reasons for non-compliance with a guideline recommendation of antibiotics within 4 hours to patients with community acquired pneumonia (CAP) presenting to the emergency department (ED) of a major Australian teaching hospital. Using this data, combined with symptom, sign and test likelihood ratios for CAP we attempted to simulate the effect of triage score and the use of pulse oximetry on the time to key processes and the probability of CAP at different stages in diagnosis.
