Short-range structure of disordered and glassy matter (2008)

Abstract
We consider condensed phases exhibiting shear-rigidity but lacking long-range order, which could be glasses as well as granular packings. Based on the similarity with atomic configurations in dense liquids and incorporating basic statistical geometry, we derive an approximation for the z(phi) expression valid for glassy systems with phi>0.5. Predictions of the present model for the mean coordination can interpret simulations and experimental data of several investigators. By applying the relation to calculate the elastic response as function of phi, good agreement has been found in the case of granular packings with 0.55
