Abstract
Since its inception, the Austrian School has battled against the twin foes of positivism and historicism. Indeed, it was in the Methodenstreit against Gustav von Schmoller’s historicist approach to economics that the Austrian School was born, or at any rate christened. Nevertheless, there is one version of historicism upon which Austrians tend to look as an ally – at least up to a point. I refer to what may be called the Verstehen
