Effects of Sequential Calcium Phosphate-Fluoride Rinses on Dental Plaque, Staining, Fluoride Uptake, and Caries in Rats (2008)

Abstract
Oral rinses which included (1) an acidic calcium phosphate solution formation of substantial amounts of DCPD in the outer containing 0. 7 M Ca, 1.9 M P04, and saturated with respect to enamel. Treatment with a dilute sodium fluoride solution CaHPO4 * 2H20, and with a pH of 2.0, followed by (2) a 0.52 M then converted the DCPD to fluorapatite, as shown by fluoride solution, from NaF or SnF2, were provided to rats once petrographic and x-ray diffraction analyses (Chow and daily for seven days. The investigation consisted of two studies: Brown, 1973, 1975). Similarly, sequential oral rinses In the first study, the amounts of dental plaque on the tooth sur- (CPS-NaF) imparted relatively high levels of stably bound faces and fluoride concentrations in the outer enamel were assessed fluoride to the enamel of rat molars (Shern et al., 1979a, seven days after the last treatment; in the second study, the extent 1979b; Brown et al., 1979) and incisors of humans (Chow of dental caries was evaluated seven weeks after the last treatment. etal., 1981). All rinse sequences containing fluoride provided significant caries protection. The acidic calcium phosphate treatment markedly In the present investigation, we measured the effects of enhanced the ability of the enamel to acquire fluoride without change sequential daily oral rinses with various combinations of of surface morphology. Only the rinse sequences that included stan- CPS, water, sodium fluoride, and stannous fluoride on nous fluoride showed significant plaque suppression. plaque, caries, staining, and fluoride uptake in molars of rats.
