Extrasolar Planetary Systems or Spectroscopic Binaries? Discrimination using Spectral Line Properties (2007)

Abstract
. We confirm the orbital solutions for the planetary companions orbiting the solar-type stars 47 UMa and 70 Vir using radial velocity data obtained with the ELODIE echelle spectrograph. Using our measurements, we can reject an alternative interpretation claiming that these systems could consist of almost face-on spectroscopic binaries. The spectral lines properties are used as rejection criteria. We also study the case of 14 Her. 1. Introduction In a recent paper, Imbert & Pr'evot (1998) have presented models of almost face-on stellar binary systems for explaining the radial velocity data of 47 Uma and 70 Vir. These stars with very small radial-velocity variations are generally interpreted as systems hosting heavy planetary companions (Butler & Marcy 1996; Marcy & Butler 1996 ). Mayor & Queloz (1995) already studied the possibility that the very low radial-velocity semi-amplitude detected for 51 Peg 6 could be due to the presence of a low mass star orbiting the primary component in ...
