Design and implementation of a high level management API (1994)

Abstract
This thesis describes a high level management Application Programming Interface (API) for the Simple Network Management Protocol version 2 (SNMPv2). The API is described in two parts. First, the basic API is described. The basic API is for the manager and the agent. The basic API allows to split agents and managers over one or more processes. Second, an enhanced API is described. Only the manager can use the enhanced API. The enhanced API is an extension of the basic API. Functionality of the enhanced API is for instance operations on tables and reliable operations. In order to design the API an SNMPv2 service specification is made. This service specification abstracts from details related to the administrative model of SNMPv2. The SNMPv2 service specification is used to derive a part of the API. A graphical model is described in this thesis. This graphical model allows to visualize management identification in a 3 dimensional space. This model gives intuitively insight in some aspects...
