and Borexino Collaboration (2007)

Abstract
In the exciting eld of the solar neutrino investigation a new experiment is expected to play soon a fundamental role: Borexino. This massive, calorimetric, liquid scintillation detector, in nal phase of installation at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, will be aimed towards one of the fundamental issues of this research, i.e. the real time determination of the ux of the neutrinos produced in the Be electron capture reaction in the Sun. As a prototype program for the large scale detector, the Counting Test Facility, operated for two years at Gran Sasso, gave the convincing demonstration that the crucial technological challenge of the experiment, i.e. the achievement in the scintillator of unprecedented radiopurity levels, can be reached successfully, thus providing the solid foundation for the construction of the experiment.
