Claude Shannon: scientist-engineer (2008)

Abstract
In this article we present an overview of the life and work of Claude Shannon, who died begin 2001. Shannon is a pioneer in many fields of science. He introduced Boolean algebra in switching theory, is the founding father of communication science, and performed several experiments related to artificial intelligence. In this paper we stress the relation between his work and the information sciences, describing, among other things, his use of n-grams. Finally, we discuss, in general, the use of n-grams in the field of information science. 2
