Finding questions through researcher sensemaking (2008)

Abstract
Finding the ‘right’ question on which to base a dissertation is a difficult choice for management students. In this paper I present an approach to finding meaningful questions which conceives of scholarly research as a sensemaking process driven by a search for plausible stories about management phenomenon. Following Weick (1995a), I show how sensemaking is occasioned after cues extracted from data are perceived by the student as ambiguous when connected to their sensemaking frame, as developed from a priori theory. Sensemaking in response to ambiguity means theoretically interesting questions may be found late, rather than early, in the dissertation experience.
