Low-temperature specific heat of Nd2-xCexCuO4-y single crystals (x=0 and 0.15) in applied magnetic fields (1998)

PHYSICAL REVIEW VOLUME NUMBER MARCH Low temperature specific heat Cex CuO single crystals and applied magnetic fields Hien Duijn Colpa Franse and Menovsky Van der Waals Zeeman Institute University Amsterdam Valckenierstraat Amsterdam The Netherlands Received February Results are presented low temperature specific heat measurements bulk single crystals Cex CuO and applied magnetic fields T The magnetic field effect shows highly anisotropic behavior for both compounds only minor effects the specific heat curve have been found for fields applied parallel the crystallographic axis whereas the field applied the plane substantial broadening and shift the zero field maximum higher temperatures observed satisfactory quantitative description terms crystal field and exchange interactions given for the experimental data the crystal shown that application the same description the case inadequate INTRODUCTION Since their discovery the electron doped Cex CuO compounds with the oxygen deficiency have been the subject intensive investigation now known these compounds exhibit complex magnetic properties mention here that the parent compound with this paper also called the undoped compound insulator The called doped compounds are superconducting for values between and and Figure shows the tetragonal crystal structure for the Cex CuO compounds combination with the noncollinear spin structure proposed for both the and sublattices the undoped compound this compound the sublattice orders antiferro
