| Formal solutions to a broad class of transient, symmetric, elastic wave problems involving a three layered plate are presented in terms of the modes of harmonic wave propagation. An approximation to the lowest mode is developed and, using this and the formal solutions, far-field expressions are developed for three specific problems.
