Open Archives Initiative

Full name of the service ScientificCommons
Description of service & content

The major aim of the project is to develop a communication medium for scientific knowledge products which are freely accessible to the public. A key objective is to support the Open Access movement and the rapidly growing number of electronic publication archives that admit to the free distribution and access to scientific knowledge. In order to provide more insides within the scientific community and to leverage the retrieval of individually relevant publications for each user, relationships between publications and authors are explored. Therefore ScientificCommons.org identifies authors across the available archives and across disciplinary, institutional and technological boundaries making social and professional relationships of the authors transparent and visible to anyone. More then six million authors have been extracted (March 2007) forming more then 23 million author publication relations. These relationships enable the creation of author profiles including an almost complete publication list, information about the publication period and the related co-authors. Furthermore a citation extraction of the full text documents allows the creation of even more relations between the publication and authors.
